Basic Online Texas Holdem Strategies
The mathematics of a Texas Holdem poker game includes knowing the basic odds of the game. This takes in the following calculations:
The amount of “outs” you have, which means the number of cards left in the deck that would improve your hand. Think of the cards that would develop you hand and count how many of them are not already revealed to you. This is your outs, which you then use to figure the chances you have to get one of these cards. To do this simply double the number of outs you have and then add 1 to this number. If your outs were 6 (meaning there are 6 cards that would improve your hand), you would add 6 + 6 = 12 and then add 1 making it 13. This means you have 13 percent chance of getting one of your cards. If you had 8 outs it would be 8 + 8 = 16 + 1 = 17 percent chance of drawing one of your cards and this is only the beginning of the mathematics used in Texas Holdem poker. You can go on even further and use this number to figure out your “pot odds” and the maximum bet you should make. There are various formulas and “pot odds calculators” you can use to learn the math involved in a poker hand. As previously stated, the more you know about this type of poker strategy, the better off you will be. It may seem very complicated, especially to a new online Texas Hold’em player or someone who may not care for math, but if you take the time to understand how it is calculated and used during an actual round of poker,
you will begin to understand it easier and realize it is not as hard as it first appears to be.
The discipline needed for poker was touched on earlier including controlling yourself when you go on tilt or have a bad losing streak and not taking it personal, but there is a little more to it as well.
A Texas Hold’em player shows discipline when they understand different types of poker games call for different forms of discipline. Examples of this would be if you were playing in a No Limit game, you understand that you should not play it the same as you would a Limit Texas Hold’em game. Make sure you are comfortable playing whatever the limit and you have the discipline needed to be involved.
The psychology involved in a Texas Holdem game is one of the exciting elements of it and the part that requires thinking along with a little acting plus a lot of observing. As you play the poker round, the psychology consist of what you believe the other players in the hand have and even more vital is what the other players believe you have. This involves “bluffing” or betting a hand as if it was a higher ranking hand than it actually is and it also includes “tells”. A tell is unknown signals or actions given out by poker players (including yourself), which lead other players to “think” they know what cards this player is holding. Some poker players who play online believe there are no tells, but this is not true.
Even if you do not actually look another player “eye-to-eye” as in a land based poker game, there are still tells given out that you can use. Keep an eye on the players and how they react throughout the poker session.
Even if you are not in the actual pot being played, you can pick up tells from other players. Just always remember this: as you are watching them – they are watching YOU too. So be careful not to reveal any of your own tells.
The fourth strategy or skill is risk vs. reward and it involves the odds or mathematics of Texas Holdem as well. You should never risk anything while playing poker, unless the reward you receive is worth it. You should not play in a poker game that you do not have enough money to play in. You must not be afraid to make a bet and you should never play with money that you need for every day expenses. You must always make certain the risk is worth the reward, whether this is placing a bet in a round or sitting down in a higher limit game.
Online Poker Tip(s): Remember playing a No Limit Texas Holdem game online differs then playing a Limit game. You will find many online poker players staying in hands when there is a limit structure (especially a low limit) then you will in No Limit games. This means there will be more players involved in the hands and more possible hands (winners). Just keep in mind that some Texas Hold’em players will play almost any two cards when the limit is low and affordable. In this type of poker game, you are better off to play “tight” or otherwise, only play when you have very good cards and are drawing to the “nuts” (best possible hand for the present round).
Online Poker Tip(s): One very basic strategy to always bear in mind concerning Texas Holdem is this: one of the best techniques to learn and improve your poker playing abilities is through practicing. There is no better way to gain knowledge of Texas Hold’em and progress further than actually playing it first-hand. So, remember to practice, practice and practice some more - as much as you can. Even the most seasoned Texas Holdem poker players can improve or pick up a new skill through playing a poker session.
